It wasn’t going to be to much longer and this award (I’m sure) would have been handed over to the young phenom named Quinn Hughes. He was drafted 7th overall in the 2018 draft and was on a blistering point run when the season came crashing to a halt due to the COVID-19 virus. It’s not very often a D-man of this calibre appears in the NHL. Hell it might be every 20 years or so, but it’s not just his scoring talent that makes him elite, it’s his skating ability and his pure talent and vision that set him apart from ANYONE else. I can’t recall seeing anyone with such amazing lateral skating ability, especially a Canuck. Not to hurt any snowflakes feelings out there, but you’ve never seen a D-man even close to this talented on the Canucks… not even close.
Now before we get to far into this review, let it be known I’m a massive hockey fan of over 35 years. I’m also a staunch Canucks fan, but I’m also the teams biggest critic. Players like Edler, Benn and Myers drive me insane with all their blunders and seemingly endless lack of effort. Not one of these guys can hold a candle next to Quinn’s natural ability. You would think Edler would be the master teacher out on the ice, or Benn would be showing Hughes the ropes, but that’s far from the real truth. This kid is the master and his peers should be watching. After all, there is only do, not try right?
Quinn, IMO is by far the more talented of the brothers (sorry Jack), but that’s a proven fact now. Hell, he’s a D-man with twice the points, that’s amazing in itself. Some folks would argue, “well jack had the pressure of being 1st overall”, but I would quickly remind them he was drafted by the Devils… Quinn plays on the CANUCKS! You can’t get much more pressure than that right? Our fan base is crazy hard on players and I’m one of them. This kid is elite and it won’t be long until the entire world of hockey takes notice. GM’s will start dreaming of the “what if” we would have taken him when we had the chance scenario. Either way, he is a Canuck now and hopefully always will be.
The Seattle expansion draft is coming, the NHL will survive COVID-19 and the rest of us fans eagerly await Quinn Hughes to dawn the skates once again.
